Born to build

I am Walter Akpedeye, a web and mobile experience designer based in Lagos, Nigeria with the capability to work remotely across global teams.

UX Designer with 4 years of experience and specialization in responsive web and mobile design. Achieved 98% customer satisfaction which has led to a 20% increase in month-on-month conversions for my startup, WebTodi, through the creation of user-tested, data-driven, and user-centered design. Eager to leverage my skills to bring cost savings and monetized improvements to your company.

My processĀ

Create content inventory first

The first step I take with a new product is building the content inventory. This includes all text, images, videos and documents necessary for the website or platform to function beyond day 0 (the beginning, when all you have is an idea). Each piece of content is assessed and grouped into relevant categories. The clutter is discarded.

Design wireframes or prototypes

All the pages and screens of the product are designed either in paper form (as a wireframe) or digitally (on Figma or Balsamiq). In this stage, I determine the appropriate organization of the content without focusing too much on the design. These low-fidelity prototypes are easier to share, collaborate, and iterate on.

Keep it simple

I keep it simple by noting the screen sizes I am building for. Web, tablet and mobile require different IA. Mobile especially requires the components to be less complex. I keep the levels in the menu structure as minimal as possible and combine pages that have little content.

Set priorities

I look at all the components of my design and make sure the most important ones are easily discoverable by the user (one to three taps away on mobile). I use my user surveys and interviews to make an educated guess of what the most important features would be to the user.

Rely on testing and feedback

I spend a lot of time getting feedback from users to measure how user-friendly my design is. These potential users help me prepare the product for launch and also play an important role post-launch, when iterating on the product.

Review IA regularly

While the IA may have been the most modern when the product was initially designed, I don't leave it to chance because newer ways of designing are birthed regularly. I therefore use the feedback from user testing, and monitor UX developments, to refresh my IA when it becomes outdated.
